Exercise of the Month

Are you tired of the same old classes, the same old machines, the same ole workout routine, or are you stuck at a fat loss plateau? Do you notice that your body exhibits muscular imbalances (your right is stronger than your left), or your balance is off, or perhaps you'd hoped those crunches would do more to help your back pain?

The answer to these problems is to incorporate functional training into your workout routine! Over the next few months we'll be adding a series of exercises to the site that you can use to add more functionality and variety to your workouts.

Balancing on one leg while exercising is a great stability training and strengthening exercise Functional training is one of the new buzz words in the fitness profession, though the concept has been used during the rehabilitation of injured workers and stroke victims for decades. The concept of functional training involves incorporating a multidimensional approach to fitness training that mimics activities that are naturally performed in work, the activities of daily living and sports.

Training functionally results in more complete development with greater strength, increased muscle mass, and better balance and coordination.

How might functional training help you? Well, over the course your day, you might bend down to pick an object off the floor at a diagonal angle, balance on one leg to reach high on a shelf, squat and put on your toddler's sweater while cradling the phone between your ear and shoulder, turn 180 degrees then lunge quickly to reach out and grab same toddler who is joyfully preparing to run into the street. We could develop a routine that incorporates similar movement patterns so that you would never again worry about spraining your ankle or losing your balance while on one leg and falling. Single leg exercises (such as single-leg squats), which require balance in a variety of directions at one time, accomplish such a purpose. The result is that the smaller stabilization muscles around the ankle, knee, and hip joints are developed more completely.
